t.Pietro Apostolo's
Church
S. Pietro Apostolo’s church is situated nearby the
castle. It was mentioned for the first time in XIV century’s
documents. Of the antique building, only the bell tower preserves its
original shape. In fact, the church has endured various rebuilding;
the last modernisation goes back to 1749 but it
is still possible to see the Gothic-primitive form of the acute
arches.
Seriously damaged by the 1944 bullets, the church
was restored by the abbot D. Flaviano Santia, at the expense of the
Fondo Culto.
The interior has three naves, divided by pilasters
reinforced by pillars, which hold up the arches. The central nave has
a barrel vault and ends with a small circular apse added in the XVIII
century; the aisles, instead, have cross vaults and end with two
rectangular chapels open to the high altar. The small wooden chancel
was made by Fortunato Baccari from Priverno (1768). The canonical
house, attached to the church, was built in 1930, at the same time as
S. Maria’s one, at the expense of the Holy See.
